Demolition of the Hochstrasse Nord: the new city centre takes shape
With the dismantling of the dilapidated Hochstrasse Nord, Ludwigshafen's largest urban-planning project in decades begins — the city centre is being reimagined.
The demolition of the dilapidated Hochstrasse Nord elevated road shapes Ludwigshafen's cityscape in 2026. After the parallel Pilzhochstrasse had already been taken down, preparations are now under way to dismantle the northern viaduct, which carried traffic over the inner city for decades. In its place a ground-level urban boulevard is to be built, reconnecting the divided city centre and creating space for new quarters between Berliner Platz and the Rhine waterfront. The city is informing residents at public meetings about the timetable, traffic routing and the plans for the future city centre. The project is seen as a once-in-a-century task and is set to give Ludwigshafen a new face.
