In late summer, the Hemshof Festival turns the streets around Hemshofstraße into a great district-wide celebration. Location & Character
North/Hemshof borders the inner city to the north and, with its tightly arranged Wilhelmine-era blocks, is one of the most densely built quarters in Ludwigshafen. Narrow streets, continuous rows of houses and many ground-floor shops shape the picture. The district is regarded as the most urban and most diverse quarter in the city, with a pronounced multicultural character.
Life in the District
Around Hemshofstraße, grocery shops, snack bars, cafés and eateries from many countries of origin line up side by side. The quarter thrives on its mix of cultures, on the bustle in the streets and on an uncomplicated, loud everyday life. Weekly markets and small owner-run shops mean that many errands can be done on foot.
History & Change
The Hemshof grew quickly as a working-class quarter with industrialisation and the nearby BASF, and has always attracted newcomers and guest workers. From this emerged the diverse face it has today. In late summer the district celebrates its history and its community with the time-honoured Hemshof Festival, one of the largest street festivals in the region.
