Ludwigshafen in One Day
If you only have one day in Ludwigshafen, you should experience both sides of the city: the young industrial town on the Rhine and its surprisingly rich art scene. We start at the Wilhelm Hack Museum with its monumental ceramic wall by Joan Miró, browse the Rhein-Galerie and stroll along the Rhine promenade with a view of Mannheim, take a detour into the lively Hemshof and let the evening wind down by the water.
Best time to visit: April to October — the Rhine promenade is at its best then
Day 1
The highlights in one day
We start at the Wilhelm Hack Museum, head into the Rhein-Galerie, have lunch by the water and finish with the Hemshof and an evening on the Rhine.
- 9:30 - 11:00
Wilhelm Hack Museum
The most important art museum in Rhineland-Palatinate, on Berliner Strasse, is the perfect way to begin. Impossible to miss even from outside is the roughly 55-metre-wide ceramic wall by Joan Miró, which has adorned the facade in glowing colours since 1980. Inside, the range spans medieval art through Kandinsky, Klee and Mondrian to concrete art.
Tip: On Thursdays the museum stays open until 8 pm — ideal if you arrive later in the day.
- 11:15 - 12:30
Rhein-Galerie and the Rhine promenade
A few steps further on lies the Rhein-Galerie right on the left bank of the Rhine — more than 130 shops on two levels, with terraces that look south across the river to Mannheim's city centre. From here you reach the Rhine promenade, the connecting piece of the 'city of two banks'.
- 12:45 - 14:00
Lunch on the riverbank
Right beside the Rhein-Galerie sits the Rheinterrasse, with a large terrace above the water. International cuisine, steaks and fish, paired with a view of passing freighters and the Mannheim bank opposite.
- 14:15 - 15:15
Theater im Pfalzbau and Berliner Platz
A short stroll through the centre leads past the Theater im Pfalzbau, one of the largest touring theatres in Germany, to Berliner Platz — the traffic heart of the city and at the same time the stage for the great urban redevelopment around the Hochstrasse Nord.
- 15:45 - 17:30
Discover the Hemshof
The Hemshof is the historic heart of old Ludwigshafen and was once its densely packed working-class quarter. Today a colourful neighbourhood life shaped by immigration pulses here, with small shops, Turkish bakeries and pubs around Hemshofstrasse.
Tip: A fresh pide or a lahmacun straight from the stone oven is part of the Hemshof experience.
- 19:00 - 21:30
Evening on the Rhine
To round things off, back to the water: the Ludwigs am Rhein, not far from the Rhein-Galerie, combines refined modern cuisine with a sweeping view of the river and the lights of Mannheim — the prime address for special evenings.
